We also have blueberries. The blueberry is a close
relative of cranberry, both being the genuis,Vaccinium . The blueberry planting on our farm was established in the late
1800's, about the same time as the first cranberry bogs on the farm. The blueberry planting consist of 1/8 acre highbush blueberries of mixed varieties.
There are three varieties currently at the farm; Rubel, Wareham and Pioneer. Rubel, a selection
from the wild introduced in 1912. Rubel is a mid to late variety with good size, color and little scaring.
The flavor of Rubel is considered good; Wareham, a cross between Rubel and Harding introduced in 1936. Wareham’s
are a late variety with medium size, good color, light scaring and excellent flavor; Pioneer is a cross between Brooks and
Sooy introduced in 1920. Pioneer is an early to mid season variety with good size, color and very good
flavor.
